1. どうして大事？
英語では「場所」や「時間」を言うとき、ほとんどの場合、前置詞を使います。
- 場所なら「～の中」「～の上」「～のそば」
- 時間なら「～に」「～まで」「～から」
前置詞を間違えると意味が大きく変わるので、よく使うものをしっかり覚えると便利です。
2. 代表的な前置詞（場所）
(1) in
中にあるイメージ
- 例）I am in the house. (家の中にいる)
- 例）He is in Japan. (日本にいる)
(2) on
上にあるイメージ / くっついている感じ
- 例）The book is on the table. (本がテーブルの上にある)
- 例）A picture is on the wall. (絵が壁にかかっている)
(3) at
正確な一点にあるイメージ（場所の一点を示す）
- 例）She is at the station. (駅にいる)
- 例）We met at the entrance. (入口で会った)
3. 代表的な前置詞（時間）
(1) in（広いイメージの時間）
ある期間の中
- 例）in the morning, in 2020, in July
(2) on（1日の中の特定の日）
特定の日や日付
- 例）on Monday, on my birthday, on July 4th
(3) at（さらにピンポイントな時間）
正確な時間
- 例）at 7 o’clock, at noon, at midnight
4. 他にもよく使う前置詞
- to : 行き先、向かう方向
- I go to school.
- from : 出発点
- I come from Canada.
- by : 手段や「～までに」
- I go to work by bus. / Finish this by 5 pm.
- until : 「～までずっと」
- I wait until 5 pm.
- with : いっしょ、道具
- I went with my friend. / Cut it with a knife.
5. よくある間違い
- in, on, atのまちがい
- ✕ I am on the house.（家の“上”になってしまう）
- 〇 I am in the house.（家の“中”）
- on の日付・曜日を「in」や「at」で言ってしまう
- ✕ I go there in Monday.
- 〇 I go there on Monday.
- “by” と “until” のちがい
- by : その時間“までに”おわる
- until : その時間“までずっと”
- 例）I must finish the work by 5 pm.（5時までに終わらせる）
- 例）I will wait until 5 pm.（5時までずっと待つ）
